| Lim Young-gyu, 29, master’s degree course student at Youngnam University School of Plastic Art won the Grand Prize in the 5th University Sculpture Contest hosted by the Daekyo Culture Foundation.
Aiming to identify an ingenious new sculptor to lead a new millennium and contribute to the growth of modern art, the contest attracted 102 pieces of young sculptors’ works. The first preliminary was complete in August and only 21 made it to final.
Youngnam University said on Oct. 18 that Lim won the prize and 10 million won with his artwork "His Dash" expressing modern people’s life consumed with daily routines while aspiring to derail and find a breakthrough.
Lim used an oxygen welder to melt steel rods of 8mm in diameter, symbolizing his concept with the melting iron. This was recognized to be a dramatic departure from conventional methods. “Just like a piled melting candle shapes up to symbolize something, I tried to express the limbs of human soul aspiring to be free from the bond of reality,” Lim explains. Studying plastic art at Youngnam University, Lim had won first prize in Daegu art contest and national art contest last year when he was a senior student.
